How to create your DREAM HOME

Brits spend an average £22 billion a year doing up their beloved homes – and from Changing Rooms to Grand Designs, there’s always something on the box to inspire us to roll up our sleeves. Now, Netflix have added another show to the roster.

Set to air on 10 August, Instant Dream Home follows a team of expert renovators who drastically transform families’ homes in just 24 hours.

While we await the results, Hannah Janikiewicz, 42, explains how she made her very own dream home a reality.

Hannah, husband Dougie, 45, and three children, Isabella, 10, Xabi, eight, and Miller, six, moved into their Victorian home in the Wirral in 2012. It was then worth £347,000 and part-derelict with outdated decor.

After some smaller renovations, they began a transformative project in 2020, and two years later, their house is worth £585,000.

Here, Hannah describes how they did it – and how you can, too.

The house facade

Made from sandstone, the front of the house was crumbling, so we spent £15,000, employing a specialist stonemason to restore it to its original beauty. For seven months, the house was covered in scaffolding, but it was worth the wait. The sash windows were also replaced with wooden, double-glazed sash windows, and the stained glass windows were maintained.

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE NOSTALGIC THAN CHRISTMASES PAST?

Do you remember the anticipation before the big day, pondering endlessly about what should go on your Christmas list? I would lovingly write two or three things down, pop it into an envelope and leave it by the fireplace to be wafted up the chimney like something out of Mary Poppins.
