There are few TV stars who can match Jane McDonald when it comes to a zest for life. Since being ‘discovered’ on the BBC show The Cruise in 1998, the hard-working performer has had a glittering career as a singer and TV presenter. But Jane’s life has not been without heartache. She lost her mum Jean in 2018 and her fiancé Ed Rothe in 2021. Now, ahead of her new tour, Jane, 61, opens up to Woman on grief, retiring and returning to the world of dating.
How did you feel about turning 60?
I was born old. I was born with a twin set and pearls, so I’m like, bring it on! I love the fact that I’ve now got an excuse to say I’m leaving a party, and going home to get settled and get my slippers on!
Tell us about your health and fitness routine – how do you stay in shape?
Mainly I’m not in shape! I don’t really exercise – if we were meant to touch our toes, they’d have made our arms a bit longer. But I do watch what I eat – if I have chocolate, I’ll have a taste of it, I don’t eat the whole bar. And I don’t eat breakfast – I have two meals a day.
How are you feeling ahead of your new tour?
