1 HIT THE BEACH
It’s easy to understand why the breathtaking Costa Smeralda, in the north of Sardinia, is nicknamed the ‘Caribbean of Europe’. It has turquoise waters, sandy coves and an incredibly laid-back vibe. But it’s not the only great place in Sardinia for playing in the surf. This Italian island north of Africa has a glorious, unspoilt coastline with some of the most beautiful beaches in the Med. Try working on your tan at the soft sanded Spiaggia Della Speranza or soak up the social atmosphere at vibrant Spiaggia del Poetto.
2 DISCOVER ANCIENT HISTORY
As well as beaches, Sardinia is brimming with historical delights. One example is Arzachena, a town with must-visit archaeological sites that date back nearly 4,000 years to the ancient Nuragic civilization. But the island has more active delights to enjoy, too, including beautiful hiking trails. Tackle Capo Testa, the furthest point of north Sardinia, with its enchanting rock shapes - or Capo Caccia on the northwest coast, home to a fascinating network of caves and cliffs. Even if you don’t like hiking, the scenery is worth the effort.

'THAT'S NOT MY BABY'
Lying in the hospital bed, my husband Michael had tears of happiness in his eyes as he showed me a photo on his phone. 'Here she is,' he said proudly. 'There must be a mistake.'It was August 2010 and I'd not long before had an emergency caesarean. I'd not had a chance to see Winnie when she arrived as she'd been whisked away for tests because she was nearly two months premature.
