MENORCA
WHY GO?
It’s got the best bits of Spain’s islands in one perfectly sized package. Beaches are long and sandy, or quiet and cove-like. Towns are cool but compact, with stylish shopping. The boutique hotel scene is so good you could check in and never leave. For a low-key vibe, Menorca is a winner.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Ciutadella and Mahon are the two main cities, both with a pretty patchwork of cobbled streets, central squares, churches and cafes. Buy handmade leather ‘Avarca’ sandals – cheap here, pricey in the UK. Hop on a classic sail boat to reach the northern beaches others cannot. Adamastaor 1967 includes a skipper (adamastor1967.com).
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK
You can’t move for great restaurants here, so we’re rating those with unique views, too. On the Ciutadella’s harbour front, S’Amarador – its lobster paella is a treat. Or go for cocktails at Cova d’En Xoroi, a cliff-side cave that’s been transformed into a chic bar.

'THAT'S NOT MY BABY'
Lying in the hospital bed, my husband Michael had tears of happiness in his eyes as he showed me a photo on his phone. 'Here she is,' he said proudly. 'This is our beautiful baby girl.'I stared at the photo and shook my head. 'No, that's not my baby,' I said. 'There must be a mistake.'It was August 2010 and I'd not long before had an emergency caesarean. I'd not had a chance to see Winnie when she arrived as she'd been whisked away for tests because she was nearly two months premature.
