Carly loved the warmest months - but this year was different
SUMMER

Carly’s mum was excited when she heard the news.

‘My first grandchild!’ she cried. ‘And a summer baby too. You’ll be able to take him or her out and about to the park. It will be wonderful!’

‘Yes, but…’ Carly began.

‘And just think, when you’re heavily pregnant, you’ll be able to put your feet up in the garden and relax. And you can watch Wimbledon on TV. You won’t miss a match… How perfect.’

Carly bit her tongue. Her mum knew just how much she loved actually going to Wimbledon. But she wouldn’t be able to this year, not with the baby due in early August.

Neither would she be able to go to Thailand. Normally she and her partner Max didn’t book holidays much in advance, but this year, the one time they’d planned ahead, the unplanned had happened.

‘We always said we’d have a baby one day,’ Max had said, hugging her. ‘And they say it’s best to have them while you’re young.’

Carly blinked back the tears. She just wasn’t ready. It was all very well for him. His life wouldn’t be that different. He’d carry on in his job. He’d probably even go to Wimbledon.

‘It’s such a big change, you just need to get used to the idea,’ Max smiled.
