For many of us, our 50s is a time when we start thinking about making a plan for our financial future. That said, putting cash aside has become increasingly challenging as the cost of living keeps rising.

However, the good news is that there are still plenty of strategies to help ensure you can get financially ahead.

This could include paying off your mortgage debt, creating super strategies or refining your insurance if your kids have flown the nest. “It’s time to start getting a financial plan specific to your situation,” says licensed financial adviser Helen Baker. Here are a few tips to get you started.

GET YOUR SUPER IN ORDER

Learn how to get the most out of your retirement nest egg. “You don’t have to be 65 or retired before you can access super,” says Helen. “There are so many strategies that enable you to stretch your funds further.”

Ask yourself if you’re ready to put your super into retirement phase, and if you have any eligible beneficiaries in place. If you’re planning on rolling your super into one account, check the insurance benefits that come with each fund first. “Do you need to keep super funds open to protect those insurances?” Helen asks.
