Dressed in a traditional Japanese "kasa" straw hat and black robe, Uni beamed as he scooted across the finish line at Cairns Esplanade, in awe at the hundreds of cheering supporters who had waited for his arrival.
The 23-year-old backpacker completed an epic trek from Melbourne to Cairns last week using only a non-motorised child's scooter and his feet.
While the 3500km journey on Australia's gravelly back roads had been tough and even treacherous at times, Uni says he's been surprised by the kindness of strangers he's met along the way.
"I was able to make it all the way here thanks to the people who talked to me and gave their help," Uni tells Woman's Day via a translation app. "I struggled a lot at first.
I hadn't prepared for this trip because I believe that when you think about something, you become anxious and unable to challenge yourself."
