Khammam city in Telangana, is located quite close to the border with Andhra Pradesh. The area is known for its rich coal reserves at Singareni, and more recently, for granite exports. A short drive of just a few kilometres out of the town towards the east, leads to fertile plantations of chilli and tobacco, for which the area is traditionally well known for.
However, Khammam residents are justly proud and boast of a little known, ancient historical monument in their town-an architectural, historical gem in the form of the Khammam Khilla or Khammam Fort.
