As soon as Joe walked into the department store, he felt unsettled. Where to start, that was the question. He'd put off buying Laura's Christmas present, hoping inspiration might strike. Today might be his last chance.
A voice snapped him out of his daydream. 'Are you OK, sir? You've been standing there for several minutes.' He turned to see a woman wearing a ridiculous elf costume. Her green eyes were almost as bright as her outfit.
He put his brain back into gear. 'I'm fine, thanks. I need to get a Christmas present for my girlfriend but I have no clue what to buy.
The elf grinned. 'It's my job to help shoppers find whatever they need. Let's grab a coffee and I'll see what I can come up with.' She steered him away from the door. Before he knew what was happening, they were in the restaurant.
She went to the counter and came back with two coffees.
'How long have you and your girlfriend been together?'
'Six months.'
Are you engaged? Living with each other?'
He shook his head.
'I see why you're struggling. Six months is too long for something small, but not long enough for a diamond ring.' She must have seen the look of shock on Joe's face because she chuckled. 'Only kidding.
What's your girlfriend's name?'
'Laura.'
