Step out on city-based walks that mix scenic views with culture and comfort

Lovable LIVERPOOL

Boots or wellies, skew-whiff stiles and pretty views are most people's idea of a walking weekend. But walking doesn't always have to be in the countryside. Instead, consider an urban ramble a city-based walk with a glug of culture, a dose of nature and all the hotels, bars and restaurants the town mouse in your life needs. Liverpool is ideal for that, with the Mersey river, a musical-maritime heritage and historic parks.

Cultural trails

Taking place in a football-mad city, your urban escapade is appropriately divided into halves. The Liverpool Waterfront and Parks Circular (available at alltrails.com, make use of the free seven-day trial) splits neatly into two: the first section is a culture-packed mosey along the Mersey; the second a peaceful stroll through city green spaces. The complete loop is just under 10 miles (16.5km) and should take around 3hr 45min. However, with so much to see and do, particularly along the waterfront, dedicate a full day (or perhaps a weekend) to it.
