From scientists and food bloggers to ordinary women, everyone is suddenly buzzing about...wheat germ. Why? In a recent study, wheat germ at breakfast helped women beat a 'menopause metabolism' and shrink their waist 4.8 times faster than normal. Meanwhile, other tests hint that compounds in the nutty kernels shift us into turbo fatloss mode. Research is ongoing, but we don't need to wait. "Wheat germ is a nutrient bomb that's stripped from wheat to make white flour," says George Washington University nutrition expert Neal Barnard, M.D. "There are only upsides to getting more." Just mix it in oats, smoothies, even baked goods, and wait for magic to happen. Readers loading up on wheat germ have shed up to 11 pounds a week without worrying about carbs or portions!
So what exactly is wheat germ? "Think of it as the plant version of a chicken egg," says Dr. Barnard. "There's a hard shell made of bran surrounding a baby plant." And just as eggs contain yolks and whites to nourish baby chicks, wheat germ contains a bonanza of nutrients to help little plants take root and flourish. Those same nutrients trigger a host of benefits in humans, including some that promise to totally transform our bodies and our health.
