"This is creepy," whispered Pam Hambach, alone in a new house she'd been hired to clean. The owner had seemed...off. And his place made her uneasy. But he's gone now, she told herself. You might as well do the job and get paid. Yet as she began dusting, every creak of the floor set her on edge. Her thoughts turned dark: What would I do if something bad ever happened? At my size, I literally can't run to save my own life. Years of stress-eating junk food had caused her weight to soar as high as 315 pounds, and it was becoming harder and harder to get around. I probably won't be able to work much longer, she realized, her knees screaming as she scrubbed the stranger's tub. Just then, she heard the garage door open. Her entire body tingled with fear as she realized: He's back!
The next thing Pam knew, she was edging past him and out the door with no explanation. Had she overreacted? I have to trust my instincts, she told herself, speeding home in her car. She reflected for a bit longer, thinking: I want to be able to trust my body too. Then and there, she vowed to get in better shape.
Finding a gentle path Up to that point, Pam had been drawn to harsh fad diets she couldn’t stick with. As she’d gotten older, they barely worked anyway. What was her best option now? It instantly hit her: I have to trust my instincts.
