Wild's Spring Issue #193 is here. Naturally, being winter, there are lots of stories about snow: on chasing Australia’s best backcountry lines; on walking the AAWT in winter; and (in a story by Tom O’Halloran, who represented Oz in climbing at Tokyo Olympics) on getting introduced to winter mountaineering in Aussie Alps. In the northern hemisphere, though, it’s summer, but that doesn’t mean there’s no snow on the ground, especially in a place like Greenland, from where we’ve got an absolutely fantastic piece on expedition paddleboarding. In other parts of Europe, though, the snow is disappearing all too fast, and we have a story on mountaineering in Monte Rosa, where disappearing glaciers are changing the nature of climbing there.  


Wild #187 is finally here, full of Australia’s best adventure, conservation, and wilderness opinion writing. In this issue, we have stories from Caro Ryan, who gives us a fictional account of how a search and rescue might typically unfold; from John Chapman, who has discovered a new hike within California's Sierra Nevada; and from photographer David Nielson, who has shared with us a wild photo essay chosen from his book Chasing the Mountain Light, capturing his trips and adventures to the furthest corners of the planet.

Steve Leeder’s air is just part of the winter celebration we’re having in Issue #184: There’s a photo essay of Steve’s backcountry aerial antics; Shaun Mittwollen writes thoughtfully on what it means to be a snow hunter in Tasmania’s rugged peaks; and Nat Walkom tells the tale of his (not always smooth) entry in the world of ice climbing at Kosciuszko NP’s Blue Lake.

 But let’s not forget that winter in Australia doesn’t necessarily mean snow and ice: We tell you where to find the best trails in Queensland’s Scenic Rim; and we have a lyrical feature from Ross Hanan who writes philosophically about the Top End’s Jatbula Trail. And speaking of being philosophical, we have a very special piece from hemiplegic Paul Pritchard, who writes movingly of what being in the mountains means for him despite the challenges they present. We also have an insightful feature by Ryan Hansen, ‘The Lost Art of taking It Easy’, that came courtesy of multiple trips to northern NSW’s remarkable Gibraltar Range.

It’s an awesome issue, one of Wild’s best ever, with several stories in there—like Dan Slater’s piece on paddling Tasmania’s Western Arthurs, and Alex Parson’s account of being bitten by a snake in the Kimberley—destined to become all-time classics. There’s also a piece by Bob Brown, Christine Milne and Tabatha Badger looking at Lake Pedder; a piece on climbing all NZ’s 3000+m peaks in a single month; a feature on walking the Top End’s little-known Tabletop Track; track notes on WA’s surprising Stirling Ranges; a photo essay on Kosciuszko's high country huts; and loads more. And not only are the stories themselves amazing; the issue has been bumped up to 124 pages, and there’s also been a complete redesign of the mag, too.

It’s an issue to get you in the mood for summer, with a focus on Australia’s high country. There’s a piece by Craig Pearce on walking on the Bogong High Plains; ride notes by yours truly on bikepacking in the Jagungal Wilderness and Kosciuszko NP; and, by Andrew Nest, a fiction piece—OK, some you may say that contributors are telling tall tales in the mag all the time, but AFAIK this is our first dedicated fiction piece in 25 years—with a heck of twist to it that’s set around Victoria’s Mt Howitt and the Crosscut Saw.
There are other nods to summer, too. There’s Stan Meissner’s fantastically photographed sea kayaking expedition off Tasmania’s coast (check out that cover!); Craig Pearce’s list of top ten recent nature books if you’re after summer reading; Ryan Hansen’s photo essay on chasing little-known summer walks in NZ’s South Island; and an informative piece by Roland Handel on dehydration and heat exhaustion. 
Beyond these, in terms of features, Megan Holbeck has done a profile of the ‘Golden Decade’ of climbing at Mt Arapiles (we’ll hold the surprise for the time being by not telling you the years yet). In ‘Walking on Country’, Caro Ryan investigates the challenges facing Indigenous-owned and operated guided walking companies, specifically looking at lutruwita/Tasmania’s wukalina Walk. And Neil Silverwood has written a companion piece to last issue’s ‘What Do We Mean When We Talk About Wilderness’, this one focuses on New Zealand’s Wilderness Areas, and how they compare with Australia’s.
