The Winter Olympics are Almost Upon Us
Best of the season to everyone and all of us here at SportsLife hope you had a wonderful holiday. Now back to sports. Yes, Iâm being a little facetious, but we really donât have much time. The 2018 Winter Olympics are almost upon us and here at SportsLife, weâre set to go. The Canadian Centre for Sport Manitoba has partnered with us to bring the best stories of the best athletes Manitoba has to offer the world and three of them â Bailey Bram, Brigette Lacquette and Jocelyne Larocque will play for Team Canada in the womenâs hockey tournament in PyeongChang.
There will be more. Although we wonât have any curlers in Korea, we will have a male hockey player or two and we can hardly wait for that announcement. As well, Heather McLean is a member of Canadaâs long track speed skating team and will, hopefully, compete in PyeongChang.
The Olympics will take place from February 9-25, 2018, in PyeongChang, South Korea, about 126 kilometres due east of Seoul. The long track speedskating team will hold their tryouts this week at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, but here in Winnipeg, weâre obviously cheering for Heather to earn her spot in the 500 and 1,000-metre events.
Besides our latest trio of Olympic athletes, weâll also introduce you to Kieran Benson from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, the Player of Year in the Winnipeg High School
Football League; world champion martial artist Akira Wojciechowski; up and coming football star Tavin Parani and University of Arziona track and cross-country runner
Jennie Baragar-Petrash.
Youâll also learn about two special teams: baseballâs Winnipeg North Pirates and the provincial Pee Wee lacrosse team, both teams were champions in 2017.
So sit back, relax and enjoy another edition of SportsLife Magazine. Itâs an Olympic year and weâre all over it.
â SCOTT TAYLOR
