In this issue highlight the work of Oliver Gray, founder of the Illyria Theatre company, touring the UK once more this summer with four plays. With pressures on schools to offer creative outlets for students, it is vital that theatres and outside bodies continue to thrive. At the heart of the performing arts is often the written word – be it an adapted novel or original play script – so it is imperative to encourage and develop a love of reading from an early age.  Building on this literacy theme, the YOTO Carnegies shortlist of children’s literature for 2024 has just been announced and there are opportunities for schools to get involved in the shadowing scheme. Applications will be open from 22 – 28 March with packs to be sent out immediately afterwards to the selected schools (see the news story in this issue’s Inbox for details).
The Big Interview in this issue is with prolific author Linda Newbery, giving us an insight into her writing process and we highlight the excellent work of Theatre Works!, ensuring more disadvantaged young people can get to experience live theatre, plus there is an inspiring interview with Zach Opere-Onguende, a young actor and facilitator with cerebral palsy, grateful for the support from Chickenshed.

Epitomizing the need to support the arts and encourage diversity, our Big Interview in this issue is with Poojah Ghai, Artistic Director of Tamasha Theatre Company, a fierce advocate for giving voice to marginalised groups and encouraging new talent. Plus, we had a Q&A with Philip J Morris, Director of the RSC’s First Encounters production of Romeo & Juliet, before it embarks on a UK tour this spring, along with Emily Grey, Chief Executive and Creative Director of British Youth Music Theatre about the organisation’s work and this year’s 20th anniversary, with big moves ahead. We also dropped into an Air Raid Shelter - an unusual resource at a primary school in Brighton, open to all school, along with theatre and book reviews and a 'What's On' listing for courses, workshops, exhibitions and productions perfect for arts teachers and their students.

In this issue we examine the need to diversify and expand the way drama is taught by introducing a wider range of texts into the curriculum. The same plays are being studied today as they were some 40+ years ago when I was at school… and that can’t be right! Society has evolved and we need to change teaching practice to reflect this. Fortunately, help is at hand. The Bloomsbury Lit in Colour campaign has compiled a list of plays written by writers of colour, which it is hoped will be incorporated into your English or drama lessons and more accurately reflect the lived experiences of your students.
Our Big Interview in this issue is with Darren Raymond, artistic director of the Intermission Youth Theatre group, who explains how he has adapted the most traditional of texts to make them accessible and relevant to young performers today. Inclusivity is also at the heart of everything Chickenshed does, and we found out how they are celebrating their 50th anniversary whilst continuing to ensure theatre changes lives.
The Theatre for Every Child campaign has been launched by the Society of London Theatre/UK Theatre, requesting that the UK government pledges a theatre trip for all children before they leave school.
With the 2023 Booker Prize winner soon to be announced, Susan Elkin puts forward a compelling case for you to incorporate the annual Booker short-list of titles into your classroom discussions and to encourage developing wider reading. Something for the Christmas list, perhaps?

A bumper issue for the start of the new school year. Following her dreams and a lifelong passion for music, Dr Hannah French is the subject for our Big Interview (p10) in this issue, as she tells us about her journey and overcoming hurdles along the way – an inspiration to all.
There was also much pride in evidence when we visited a school’s end of year performance of King Midas, led by the team at Bright Torches Theatre Company, integrating performance with a creative learning environment and providing a fitting climax for year six pupils.

The Big Interview in this issue is with crime thriller writer William Shaw, a master of convincing readers by creating real environments.
Encouraging reading for pleasure in your students is also the subject of the ‘Pause for Thought’ piece in this issue (page 23), intrinsic to a lifetime of discovery and learning, and finding the spark to ignite their reading curiosity is key. With the summer months ahead, and textbooks put away, let’s hope that reading for pleasure can be encouraged. For inspiration, read our interview with Rachael Rogan, founder of the BookTastic programme, passionate about instilling a love of reading in children from all backgrounds.
This issue also includes an in depth look at the RSC’s raft of resources and events to support teachers and students looking to study of The Empress, prior to the staging of the play in both Stratford-upon-Avon this summer and later in the year at the Lyric in Hammersmith.  Also on the syllabus, Blackeyed Theatre are staging a revival of Oh! What a Lovely War, with an extensive UK tour later this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the show’s premiere and we caught up with its director for an insight.

Developing a love of books and reading starts with picture books and so the role and importance of illustrators is intrinsic to this process, despite which illustrators are often given little recognition on book covers. Our Pause for Thought feature in this issue puts the case for equal recognition to be given to these skilled visual story tellers and we managed to grab a chat with illustrator Emily Snape, juggling her freelance work with family life, teaching and writing her own books.
We also managed to chat with the impressive Paterson Joseph, about his journey into acting, performing with the RSC and his new historical novel charting the life and achievements of Charles Ignatius Sancho, 18th century writer, composer and activist.
Our dip into college life took us on an extensive tour of Trinity Laban and the breadth of courses they offer in music, dance and musical theatre in the beautiful Old Naval College on the banks of the Thames at Greenwich.

As we approach International Women’s Day, I am delighted that this issue includes interviews with three inspiring women from across the industry. For the ’Big Interview’ in this issue, we managed to grab some time to chat with the formidable Josette Bushell-Mingo, Principal and CEO of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, two years into her tenure and determined to put students at the heart of all the college does. We also managed to meet playwright Tanika Gupta, to discuss her life and forthcoming play, The Empress, now on the GCSE syllabus, which is currently in production with the RSC. Plus we took time for a coffee with experienced director, and now author, Nancy Meckler to discuss her long-awaited first book Notes from a Rehearsal Room.
Our Exhibition review this issue took in two contrasting shows – Alice Neel’s retrospective and the more abstract Action Gesture Paint, offering students the opportunity to experience diverse approaches to the subject. Continuing the theme of observation, we dropped in on various workshop sessions at the recent National Theatre Drama Teacher Conference, attended by enthusiastic (of course!) drama teachers.

In this issue we look at the National Youth Theatre Rep company, celebrating its tenth anniversary and a springboard for many now famous actors, and at the opportunities offered by various apprenticeship schemes, designed especially for those looking for a non-performing career in the arts. 
The Big Interview in this issue is with Chris Elwell, CEO of the vibrant Half Moon Theatre in London’s East End, specialising in work for and with young people. Our trip to an exhibition this issue takes in three Lucian Freud shows running concurrently in different venues across London, yet we still have time for a Coffee Break with Louisa Read, author of the YA verse novels Gloves Off, Wrecked and Activist. I’ve recently been exhibiting at an education show and it was wonderful to be ‘out’ amongst like-minded souls, free of restrictions and masks after the past couple of years hibernating. Despite all that is going on elsewhere in the world, there was definitely an uplifting feeling at the event and I realised how much I’d missed interacting with real humans and seeing smiles! For those in education and the performing arts world, it is this positive human reaction that drives you to inspire and perform, bringing joy and an escape from reality, or perhaps to challenge and provoke thought.

The ‘Big Interview’ in this issue is with the talented and determined Dame Floella Benjamin, who recounts her journey from Trinidad to the House of Lords and is currently looking forward to the opening of Coming to England, a musical adaptation of her Windrush inspired 1995 book.

The 'Big Interview' in this issue is with panto-stalwart Peter Duncan, now writing, performing and broadcasting his own home-based family panto – born out of the necessity to improvise during last year’s enforced lockdown.
Emerging from the pandemic, creatives, theatres and drama schools have all had to adapt and adopt new methods of practice. This has given many the opportunity to “reset” and re-evaluate how they operate. Drama schools have had to introduce online auditioning and many are adapting their training to cater for both industry requirements and the aspirations of their students. Although many are looking for a fast-track into television roles, the traditional transferable skills developed at drama school are invaluable and the ‘traditional’ methods should not be overlooked.
Alongside any evolving of the training, performing arts schools are also recognising the need to become more representative and diverse, which should open the doors to a wider cohort of aspiring performers. One such progressive school, Bird College, is the focus of our feature in this issue, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, having come a long way from its original role as a dance school.
Also in this issue we take a look at how Little Angel Theatre is embracing new digital technology, whilst remaining focussed on its core of creating theatre for children using puppetry. Spring always seems to bring new hope, with plants springing to life after their winter hibernation and this year, perhaps more than most, this new hope seems to be more pertinent to all of us. On my daily dog walk, I have been watching as the bluebells miraculously start to emerge and their scent now fills the air once again… so I know spring is really here! Having endured a challenging year, let us hope that this spring there truly is a new start and life can return to a semblance of ‘normal’.
Whilst students have returned to school and you are managing bubbles, it may yet be a while before school theatre trips can fully resume, but there are an increasing number of online resources and productions to help you ensure your cohort can still enjoy the delights of live performance to enhance their studies and inspire their thoughts. 
Perhaps one of the positives to be taken from the past year is how theatre creatives have been devising new formats and online resources for you to embrace these opportunities; such as the multiverse adventure-style gameplay adaptation of Romeo & Juliet from Creation Theatre (page 16), which allows audience members to choose alternative outcomes and interact live with the  characters.
Proving that the online world can open up new opportunities, we take a look at the ‘lockdown’ work from Graeae (page 13) and their latest series of online duologue plays, Crips without Constraints 2, pairing a disabled actor with the likes of Harriet Walter. As an antithesis to the online world, our Big Interview in this issue is with puppeteer Ronnie le Drew, still performing in his 70s, demonstrating that there are many ways to tell a story (page 8).
Theatres are scheduling productions, drama schools conducting their auditions (online)… signs that we are emerging from hibernation
and normality WILL resume!

Our Big Interview in this issue is with director and actor Matthew Parker, who himself has had to make some late changes to his schedule, but who will hopefully be treading the boards at The Maltings this December. We also chatted to Fourth Monkey’s Director of Training, Charlene Qwaye, to learn how this innovative school is evolving and gleaned some useful tips for online auditionees from the directors at ArtsEd.  For budding writers, check out the recent opportunity being offered by HighTide on page 23.  With most galleries currently closed, we have compiled a great guide to many of the online exhibitions that are ‘open’ to visitors. 

I am surely not alone in wondering why it has been possible to go to the cinema or sit in a plane next to strangers for several hours, yet theatres have remained dark? Are theatres really that dangerous? Unfortunately, easing of restrictions has come too late to salvage most of the traditional Christmas shows and pantos on which regional theatres rely, but of course, if nothing else, the arts world is full of creative people. It is heartening to see how inventive producers have been, to adapt and utilise new technologies to keep producing ‘live’ performances. We round up several of these in this issue, offering you the opportunity to take in everything from school plays to Shakespeare, either at home or in the classroom, and hope you may be able to donate or subscribe to assist struggling artists.
Our Big Interview in this issue is with Alexia Khadime, who should have been staring in The Prince of Egypt, but who has spent ‘lockdown’ performing online to support those less fortunate in the theatre industry. Read her story from page 6 and in other features this issue, discover how colleges, schools and producers are making use of new learnt skills to get us through this. After all… the shows MUST go on!
