Following a robust post-Covid-19 demand surge, the Indian automobile market saw sales stabilise in 2024. Amid growing inventories and the highest discounts since Covid-19, hopes for a robust festive season ran high. Although the season’s early start at Onam was lukewarm, the resilient Indian middle class turned out in full force, driving the industry to a record high in October. Within one month, the unique convergence of significant festivals—Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, and Dhanteras—amplified this surge.

The industry seemed to be returning to its old habits of pushing metal in the market and resorting to price war through discounting to release piled-up stock and ease the pressure. We bring you the full analysis.

In 2005, Tata Motors launched the Tata Ace, a mini truck designed to offer fleet operators superior payload, speed, and efficiency compared to three-wheelers. This innovation met the demands of a rapidly urbanising India.

Though on a low base, Tata Motors' homegrown rival, Mahindra & Mahindra, quietly ruled the roost in the large pickup truck segment.

As urbanisation gathered speed, the demand for pickup trucks handsomely outpaced the mini-truck segment, with the stakes gradually shifting in favour of pickup trucks over mini trucks in the last decade.

At the end of 2012, Mini trucks accounted for 70% of the fast-growing small commercial vehicle market, with pickup trucks making up the rest; the ratio reversed in the last decade.

Affectionately called Chota Haathi, the Ace faces stiff competition from electric three-wheelers at the entry level, whereas the pickup truck segment is at the top. Not surprisingly, M&M has been handsomely extending its lead over Tata Motors. Tata Motors has seen its position in the SCV market erode continuously over the past few years, while Mahindra has moved ahead.

Through all this, consumers are turning out to be the real winners.

Indian auto’s record highs: As the Indian car market continues to scale new peaks new and clearer market trends are emerging. While SUVs and crossovers are making gains everywhere, small cars and hatchbacks are not in a mood to give up territory so easily despite the fact that one in every two vehicles sold in FY24 was an SUV.

What the country witnessed was the growth of SUVs by over 28% to 2.1 million units with more than 50% of them being above four metres. Betting big on Hydrogen

A shot in the arm for green hydrogen production in India as the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has received thirteen technical bids for pilot projects for the use of green hydrogen in the transport sector.  ARAI, the implementing agency for these projects, is currently conducting a technical evaluation of the proposals. Meanwhile, an allocation of Rs 496 crore has been made for green hydrogen and other related projects until 2025-26.
