Highlights of India Today â1st February 2021 issue:
Despite the multiple crises before him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi retains his popularity. India's rightward shift also becomes more pronounced.
West Bengal Election - The Power Of Nine
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the nine districts of south Bengal delivered 19 of 22 seats for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In terms of assembly segments, it translated into 138 seatsâtwo thirds of the TMC tally in the last assembly election held in 2016. Barely months from now, the partyâs performance in these very districts will be critical in determining Mamata Banerjeeâs fate in a âdo or dieâ electoral battle against the BJP. The nine districts are: Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, Bardhaman, Birbhum and East Medinipur, which together hold 178 assembly seats.

THE RETURN OF SASIKALA
On January 19, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) flew to Delhi, ostensibly to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the inauguration of the new Jayalalithaa memorial in Chennai. But it was no secret that the main item on the agenda was the impending release of V.K. Sasikala, the mercurial aide of the late AIADMK icon J. Jayalalithaa. She will be released from the Parapp anna Agrahara Jail in Bengaluru on January 27. Chennai is already agog with talk of the impact she will have in the coming state assembly election. Of course, since her incarceration in 2017 was on charges of corruption and financial misdemeanour, she is debarred from contesting elections or holding any office for at least another four years.
