Kalachuvadu January 2024 Special issue

The issue has two Special Sections:

1. Tamil and other languages: Native speakers of other languages have been making valuable contributions to Tamil. This section carries a couple of articles on this phenomenon and a few profiles of writers and publishers who belong to this category.

2. The tragic story of Gaza: This section looks deep into the tragedies of the Palestinian people. It contains articles and poems on the issue.

The issue has two editorials. One is a detailed and in-depth analysis of the recent state elections and the other one is on Sahitya Academy Award.

The issue carries an elaborate interview of renowned historian Nayanjot Lahiri by Maruthan Gangatharan.

An article deals with the causes and solutions of heavy rains and floods in Tamil Nadu.

Critical analysis of Australian cricket team’s success formula.

Renowned musician T.M. Krishna writes about Perumal Murugan who has won the JCB award for this year.

Short stories of Vasanthi and Perumal Murugan have been carried.

The debate section has a couple of critical responses to the articles published in the last issue on Periyar and Rajaji.

The Story of a Curse: Marudan tells the story of the Kohinoor diamond based on historical data and various beliefs about the precious stone. Although the write-up is based on facts, Marudan’s narrative makes it read like a fictional work.

US Elections: Sachidanandan Sugirtharaja sharply analyzes the reasons for Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election and the possible consequences.

TMK and MS: Did T.M. Krishna disparage M.S.? - Sukumaran sheds new light on the heated debate in the music world.

Obituary: Stalin Rajangam accurately assesses Raj Gauthaman's contribution with a historical perspective. J. Balasubramanian gives a neat picture of V.T. Rajsekhar's contribution.

Magster note for Kalachuvadu September 2024 issue
The editorial deals with the law and order issues in Tamil Nadu and how the state police handle them. “Encounters” by police cannot be the solution, the editorial asserts.
Mu. Ramanathan, an expert in international affairs, gives a detailed account of what happens in Bangladesh. Political critic Thirunavukkarasu looks deep into the issue of sub-reservation among SC/ST category. He sees the move as an extension of social justice.
The cover story is about Pa. Ranjith’s recent movie Thangalan. Aravindan places the movie as a serious artistic attempt to portray the oppressed people's history. He highlights the artistic richness while pointing out some flaws in the screenplay that confuses the viewers.

Editorial looks deep into the three new criminal laws. It highlights the dangerous aspects of the law in terms of basic human rights guaranteed by our Constitution. 
Kalanthai Peer Mohammed has written as analytical article of Supreme Court Judgement on Talaq. The articles speaks on behalf of the rights of Muslim women getting divorced. 
Writer and Environmentalist Theodore Bhaskaran has written about the possible disastrous environmental impact of a government scheme to be implemented in Nicobar islands.
Two articles analyses the proposals given by Justice Chandru in his recommendations on caste ridden environment in TN schools.
Obituaries for R. Sambanthan (Sri Lankan Thamizharasu Party leader) and world renowned writer Ismail Kadare have been published.

The editorial highlights the importance of freedom of expression for each and everyone irrespective of their political or philosophical leanings.  

Detailed interview of renowned Siddha Doctor G. Sivaraman has been carried in this issue. Mr. Sivaraman, who is also a public speaker and a writer, is known for his integrated approach towards health. He underscores the importance of traditional medical systems without undermining the significance of modern medical science. He insists on taking care of our lifestyle to stay healthy. The interview deals with various issues related to health. This is the first comprehensive interview of Mr. Sivaraman.

K. Thirunavukkarasu analyses in detail about the implications of Lok Sabha elections. His focus is on BJP and Modi. The insights of the article make it stand out.

A Telugu short story by S. Jaya (translated by Gowri Kripanandan) and a Tamil short story by Hemi Krish are published in this issue.

Filmmaker and writer Amshan Kumar pays tribute to Pandit Rajiv Dharanath, a renowned Hindustani musician.

The article captures the essence of the book by highlighting the importance of writing in the life of a writer in his toughest times. Kalachuvadu May 2024 issue
The issue carries two editorials. One is on the custodial deaths in Tamil Nadu. The editorial looks deep into the issue of custodial deaths and tortures. The second editorial highlights the importance of some of the progressive announcements made in the election manifesto of the Congress party.
Stalin Rajangam has written about the social and political importance of boycotting the elections by a set of people in TN.
The issue has carried three articles as tribute to Ayurvedic Doctor L. Mahadevan who had recently passed away. Siddha Doctor G. Sivaraman, Kalachuvadu Editor Kannan, and Ayurvedic Doctor Suneel Krishnan have written these articles.
The literary section has 17 poems by 9 women poets. It also carries two short stories by Kalanthai Peer Mohamad and Senkathir. The interview of writer N. Sriram has been carried in the issue.

The December 2023 issue has two editorials. One is about how the book fairs are conducted at the district level. The editorial details the pluses and minuses of the district book fairs and puts forth valuable suggestions to improve them. The second editorial questions the rationale behind not wishing people for festivals like Deepavali. The editorial highlights the inner contradictions of politicians’ approach. 
A special section on Rajaji, Periyar and Kamarajar analyses the relationships between these stalwarts. A.R. Venkatachalapathy and Pazha Athiyaman have written research-based articles on the subject with some unique perceptions.
A conversation with veteran writer and scholar Seeni Viswanathan, who has contributed enormously to the field of Bharathi’s works.  
Political analyst K. Thirunavukkarasu analyses in detail about the war happening between Israel and Hamas.

A detailed and in-depth interview of contemporary writer J.P. Chanakya has been featured. The interview deals with Tamil literature, Tamil cinema and social issues. 

A long story by senior writer Sureshkumara Indrarajith has been published. It is a historical fiction with a modern perspective. 

Lavanya Sundararajan has made a comparative study of three recently released Tamil novels (Neduneram by Perumal Murugan, Adaikum Thal by Salma, and Nizhal Nathy by Kalanthai Peer Mohammed). Lavanya looks deep into the way love is handled in these novels that revolve around the issue of love. 

Poems, book reviews and regular columns add value to the content of the issue.

Magster note for Kalachuvadu October issue

The editorial is a detailed analysis of Sanatana Dharma debate. It questions the genuineness of the advocates of Sanatana Dharma in eradicating the inequalities of Hinduism. Senior writer P.A. Krishnan traces the various explanations and definitions of Sanatana Dharma through ages.

Short stories by Perumal Murugan and Malacia Srisanthan and poems by Lavanya Sundarrajan and Pa. Raja have been featured in literary pages.

A special section on eminent writer Sundara Ramaswamy on the eve of his 18th death anniversary carries his letters and an analytical article by Aravindan on Su.Ra.’s novel Kuzhanthaigal Pengal Aangal.

Subramani Ramesh has presented a unique view on Isai poems. He places Isai poems as modern expressions of Tamil classical tradition.

A scholarly article by Prof. S. Rajaram and Prof. A.K. Perumal on the relationship between Tamil and Sanskrit during the classical age has been published. The article is the preface of a book published by Kalachuvadu on the same subject.

Apart from the regular columns and book reviews, Article on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, obituary on famous translator Edith Grossman and the reflections of a writer on the wrapper design of his book add different colours to the issue.

Renowned historian and writer Ramachandra Guha’s extensive interview has been featured as a cover story. This is the first time that a Tamil magazine carries his elaborate interview.
The issue has two editorials. One is on the lack of government action on the commission report on Tutukkudi firing that took place a few years ago. The second editorial speaks about the police action against selling a couple of books in a book fair.
Two articles have been carried on Nanguneri violence against Dalit students. The article analysis the socio political factors behind such actions and reactions.
A new story of veteran writer G. Alagirisamy has been found and published in this issue. Aravindan’s story on a sports person has also been published. The issue has also carried Clarice Lispector’s story.
Obituaries of Kathar and Pulavar Irasu have been published.

The issue has two editorials. One deals with the usage of history in our contemporary political context and the other discusses the politically motivated arrestes by BJP government aiming to curb the voice of dissent.

J.R.V. Edward analyses the riots of Manipur while Stalin Rajangam analyses Melpadi Temple  entry issue. Both give some insights that could enable the reader understand the issues in a broader perspective.

The destruction of the public library has left a permanent wound in the memories of Tamils all over the world. Kalachuvadu has rekindles the memories with some poems and a note by senior poet Cheran.
The editorial has analyzed the reasons and possible impact of Karnataka assembly elections. It looks into the larger picture of next year’s parliamentary elections.
Chenthuran has penned a detailed note on the real meaning and value of freedom of expression in the light of recent developments in Tamil Nadu in political and cultural arenas. 
K. Thyagarajan, the author of a book on translation has written an outstanding article on the approaches and issues of translation.
Thi. Janakiraman’s writing on Bharathiyar and his quest for knowledge has been published in this issue. 
Short stories by Aravindan and Tayib Salih (Arabic) are published. 
Sachithanandan Sukhirtharaja has commented on the swearing in ceremony of Prince Charles. He has critically examined the religious overtone of the whole ceremony. Leading lawyer Ajitha has written an article on the controversy surrounding the famous cultural organization Kalakshetra over a sex scandal.


The issue has carried a follow up story to the previous issue’s cover story on sexual violence in literary and arts circle by publishing an anonymous letter by a girl who claims to have been sexually abused by a theatre person. ParthibaRaja, mentioned in the previous issue as one of the sexual abusers, has written a denial letter. Kalachuvadu has published it in full and responded to the queries he has raised. 
The editorial analyses the pros and cons of eradicating the exclusive schools for SC/ST students in Tamil Nadu.
Tho. Pathinathan, Sri Lankan Tamil writer has written an article on TN court verdicts vis-à-vis Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. 
The issue has reproduced an old interview of G. Alagirisamy, one of the pioneers in  modern Tamil literature. This year is the centenary year of the writer.
P. Kamalakkannan, PhD student in JNU, has written a profile on George L Hart in the series that pays tribute to the outstanding octogenarian contributors to Tamil culture and language octogenarians.
Asi. Kantharaja from Australia and Srikanthan from Malaysia have written short stories in this issue. 
Pazha Athiyaman has given an interesting account on Vaikkom Struggle on the eve of its centenary year. 

The special focus of the April 2023 issue is the issue surrounding the accusations of sexual abuse by a writer. The section carries analytical articles by Aravindan and Senthuran and interviews with the victims. The section elaborately discusses various aspects of the matter. 
Stalin's Rajangam writes on the importance Sathyavani Muthu and his importance in Tamil Nadu politics on the eve of  her centenary.
Writer Pathinathan has narrated the plight of those Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu. Poet Cheran has compiled some poems that express the longings of the refugees.
Mu. Ramanathan writes on Perumal Murugan's novel 'Pyre' getting shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Booker Award.
Theodore Bhaskaran illustrates the brilliance of the Oscar-winning Tamil documentary film.
The issue has a special section of Porunai Pages that chronicles the life and works of legendary Tamil personalities. This issue’s Porunai Pages features Kavimani Desika Vinayakam Pillai.
Apart from these items the issue also has Yuvan Chandrasekhar’s unique short story, Sundara Ramaswamy’s insightful letters and book reviews.

K C Magzter Note for Issue 279
AI is at the center of debate in literary circle too. The day may not be too far when AI starts writing fictions and literary critique. Karthik Ramachandran explores the possible developments in the literary arena and analyses the fear of AI making the writers redundant. 
Vengai Vayal, a small village in Pudukkottai district, has shocked everyone by humiliating Dalit residents in an unimaginable way. Dalit historian and political critic Stalin Rajangam points out that Vengai Vayal incident is not new to the district in his critical essay on the incident. He draws the attention of the readers on the wide spread trend of toxic casteism and calls for a larger debate on such issues.  
Writer B. Venkatesan analyses the impact of colonial approach towards oriental life in the backdrop of Devibharathi’s recent novel Noyyal. Aravindan analyses the creative world of writer Imayam and explores how the writer gets into the skins of his characters. 
Perumal Murugan shares his experience of participating in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharath Jodo. K. Thirunavukkarasu reflects upon the freedom of expression in various angles in the wake of the controversy over the documentary movie by BBC on Narendra Modi and Gujarat riots.
S.J. Sivashankar’s short story and the poems by Jeevan Benny and Senthi have been published in this issue. 
Renowned writers Ya. Manikandan and Pazha Athiyaman have written about Bharathi’s translation of Vedas and the centenary of Vaikkam struggle respectively.   

January is the month of Tamil books. Chennai book fair, the biggest event in writing circle, happens in January every year. It is but natural that the February issue reflects upon the book fair in its editorial. A special section of visuals shows the vibrant activities in Kalachuvadu stall in the fair.
Sahitya Academy Award (for translation) winner Nallathambi speaks about his perceptions and experiences on translation in his conversation with senior writer Paavannan. 
The conversation between Ki. Rajanarayanan and Vallikkannan on G. Azhagirisamy throws light on the writings and personality of G. Azhagirisamy. The insightful conversation was broadcasted in AIR 44 years ago. The transcription of the same is published for the first time thanks to the efforts of writer Pazha Athiyaman. It gains more importance as this is the centenary year of legendary G. Azhagirisamy.
Yuvan Chandrasekar analyses Sureshkumara Indrajith’s short stories in detail. This well written article dwells deep into the fictional world of Sureshkumara Indrajith. 
A translation story (from Sinhalese) and the one by Santhan have been published in this issue. Poems by Regi Sirivardhane and Anar add colour to the literary pages. 
Renowned linguistic scholar and writer Professor S. Rajaram’s contributions have been traced in an article by Ira. Araventhan. This is a part of Kalachuvadu’s 80 + series which pays tribute to the living legends of Tamil cultural scenario.

The ever honoured and ever criticised personality would be none other than Mahatma Gandhi. After a century had passed since his demise he remains immortal. This is the notion behind to bring Gandhi a subject of new discussions. The writers and activist born after Gandhi see him with different perspectives. In this issue the special section devoted for this contains articles by Suneel Krishnan, T Kannan, Chira Balasubramaniam, Balasubramanian Ponraj, Aravindan Kanniyan and Suresh Pradeep. It is the season of reading in Tamilnadu as the Chennai Book fair happens in this month . This issue focuses on the new books and new book culture. Aazhi Senthilnathan in his extensive interview speaks to Aravindan about the impact and result  of AI in the Tamil milieu. Sudarvizhi writes on the contributions of A R Venkatachalapathy to the Bharati iyal. Four short stories published here unexpectedly track the progress of Tamil fiction thru generations. The writers are Ku Alagirisamy, Vannanilavan, S Senthilkumar and Amutha Aarthi who belong to different generations.


The celebration of Hindu fanatics on the sworn in of Sunak Rishi as the Prime minister of the United Kingdom is much discussed in the media. Satchidanandan Sugirtharaja from London probes into the real things in his article . K Thirunavukkarasu writes on the recent verdict of Supreme court of India about the economic based reservation . S R Krishnamurthy the celebrated translator who translates from French to Tamil and vice versa has been interviewed by D I Aravindan. Sri Lankan Tamil writer Thelivathai Joseph,Tamil writers and activists P Jayaprakasam and Vizhi Pa Idhyavendan, scholer Kasuman and Malayalam poet T P Rajeevan remembered in the tributes paid to them.Kumaranandan's short fiction, Sivasankar's poem and articles by Stalin Rajangam, G Gurusamy and Y Manikandan make the literary section a not to miss item. In the 80 + section Vasanthi Devi , well known educationist and formal vice chancellor is remembered by Manikumar.

Hijab, the attire for muslim women became a controversial stuff for the fundamentalists in Iran and the basics for the revolt there. The reciprocation dashes in other parts of the globe. Sharmila Seyyid and Peer Mohammed write on the matter in detail. Kalachuvadu is an international monthly journal for politics and culture. Published since 1988, it was founded by the noted Tamil writer Sundara Ramaswamy (1931-2005). Kalachuvadu was published first as a quarterly then a bi-monthly and has been a monthly since 2004.
