Things aren’t always what they seem. Scratch the surface a little and you might be surprised at what you’ll find behind some the greatest ideas, products and places. Interior Designer Martin Lawrence Bullard may seem like he’s effortlessly decorating the homes of Hollywood stars one at a time, but in fact, there’s been plenty of drama along the way. Think Dubai is all about ostentatious development? Pritzker-prize winning RCR Architect’s modernist residential tower in Palm Jumeirah proves otherwise. And sure, a trip to northern Scandinavia to see those fabled Northern Lights may sound like a fairytale, but getting there is another story. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it’s so worth it- just like reading this issue, because you’ll also find out exactly what the luxury watch industry is up to in Dubai, thanks to our special Dubai Watch Week supplement.

This Ultimates is packed with amazing people, products and places, such as Rami Tabbara and his company Stake, which is allowing people of all means to fractionally own properties as investments. Or Studio VDGA that’s employing an ancient Indian science of harmony to elevate residential architecture in our region. Of course getting Santiago Calatrava was a huge honour and a major highlight. As was reviewing the Mandarin Oriental Emirates Palace and the Waldorf Astoria Seychelles. Remember that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.

From our exclusive interview with Sinan Al Saady of Cool Inc. to a long feature on AlUla, which is of course at the forefront of Saudi Arabia’s drive to diversify their economy, we have put together a very insightful – or should we say ‘Considered Issue.’ Elsewhere, we met Michael Kors, one of the most grounded creative directors on the international circuit, we got Jeremy Clarkson to reveal how Porsche has finally made a 911 to get excited about, we curated a ‘Surprise Me’ supplement, we visited Renzo Piano’s impressive new museum in Istanbul and so much more.

It was very difficult to put together an Ultimate Awards Issue given the misery of what is going on in Palestine right now. Still, we did the best we could despite the fact we can’t discuss politics. We found a margin of manoeuvre in the interview with Mia Khalifa and shed the light on many admirable people, products, and places – like Jumana Ghouth, Hamad Sultan, Sayar & Garibeh, and the ‘Atlantis, The Royal’ in Dubai. Rest assured it’s another jampacked issue. Enjoy the journey we take you on and let us hope that 2024 gives us reason to be optimistic for the future once again.

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection then we can catch excellence.” This quote resonates so much with us, and it beautifully encapsulates the kind of stories that we were trying to chase down this time around for our ‘We Do Better Issue.’ From interviews with Averda’s CEO, Malek Sukkar, and OnlyFans’ CEO, Amrapali Gan, to escaping to Greece’s Amanzoe and gaining an unconventional perspective on Monaco, there are many inspiring stories not to be missed. And we didn’t even mention the ‘Rethink It’ supplement.

What a year it has been. The crash of crypto assets, rising interest rates, double-digit inflation and the looming prospect of recession should have put a damper on things but we still found so much to celebrate in this our annual Ultimate Awards Issue. We also flew far and wide putting it all together, from trying out the glorious new Aman in New York, to Baros in the Maldives via Disney World in Orlando, we certainly accumulated miles. But, we also got to meet some incredible people too, like Dr. Daisy Robinton and Amale Andraos. It’s a good one.

Starting with Heba El-Dessouky, a talented Egyptian model turned actress who exudes a dichotomous combination of shyness and bravery, this issue is chock-full of stories that fit our original theme of those who refuse to be followers. There’s Lyna Khoudri, Wael Al Awar, Aljoud Lootah, Halima Aden, Anne-Lise Crouan, plus a supplement dedicated to the art of being “Different”. A lot to take on board, perhaps, but hopefully you’ll appreciate that, just like us, they have found fulfilment in taking the unbeaten track.

This was supposed to be the year when everything went back to normal but regardless of whether we’re in a global pandemic derived state of uncertainty or not, we have kept to our annual tradition of ending the year with an Ultimate Awards Issue because, simply put, it’s not all doom and gloom. As Steve Huffman of Reddit, Pierpaolo Piccioli from Valentino, Geneva’s first all-suite hotel and Lamborghini’s drive towards a more sustainable future will show, there are still plenty willing to lead the way. It truly is an issue that’s rich in hope.

Building on the idea that the coronavirus pandemic represents a rare but narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world, we set out to create an issue that provides plenty of food for thought. It’s also why we rounded up some extraordinary people this time around, like Julia Roberts, Greta Thunberg, Giuseppe Santoni, Giorgio Armani, Jean Nouvel and Danielle Badra. And there’s a fun supplement to look out for too; it’s entitled !#*? because it’s often the unexpected that changes our lives. 

The ‘Ultimates’ is a long-running end-of-year tradition of ours but, as you can imagine it was a mountain to climb putting together an issue of this nature in a year like 2020. But we did it. And it just goes to show that positivity can always be found; all you have to do is look a little harder. From HRH Prince Al Hassan of Jordan to Remo Ruffini of Moncler, via Frank Gehry and David Adjaye, we brought together some exceptional leading lights, all of whom personify excellence, even in the darkest of times. It’s an issue you can’t afford to miss.

If one thing’s for certain it is that 2020 has been a historically difficult year that has raised more questions than answers. As such, we thought it was an opportune time to take a deep dive into the Q&A format. Standout features then include interviews with Lebanese directly impacted by the August 4th Beirut Port blast, including architect Bernard Khoury and fashion designer Zuhair Murad. We got up-close and personal with Yousra Mohsen, the first Arab to ever star in Paris’ Crazy Horse cabaret. We visit a stunning house in Amman by the husband and wife duo of Tollgard Design Group and we went aboard an extraordinary Zaniz-designed superyacht.

At a time in which the world is self isolating due to a viral pandemic, there is a unique opportunity for reinvention so this issue raises a fundamental question: what would you do differently if you had another chance? We learn firsthand why Bill Gates has become a full-time philanthropist. Kim Kardashian reveals how not having a degree won’t stop her from pursuing her dream of becoming a lawyer. Our Asides supplement is dedicated to the concept of being “woke”, we managed to travel to two far-flung destinations (before the international travel ban) and we found some truly extraordinary vehicles, all of which encapsulate the spirit of being Born Again.

This issue is all about perception, whether in terms of individual aesthetics or the way a course of action is perceived by others. Case in point we kick things off with an exclusive interview with Princess Deena Al-Juhani Abdulaziz, the Saudi fashionista who launched Vogue Arabia only to be fired two issues later. Our August/Sept 2017 – What the Heck? issue – is inspired by those crazy things that take your breath away for a wealth of reasons. From erotic watches to Zaha Hadid’s upcoming hotel in Dubai via a state-of-the-art detox retreat in Bavaria where they’ll have you swallow pill-sized cameras to know you inside and out, you’ll find some of the world’s most outrageous products in our WHOA! supplement. But this month’s main mind-bogglers come courtesy of Queen Rania of Jordan, who chimes in on her view of the Middle East’s current state of affairs (a subject that always gets us going) and Virgin-founder Richard Branson, whose unconventional approach to business has made him one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. Our June/July 2017- Happy issue- Our April/May 2017 – Indispensable Issue – to kick off summer on a positive note, we’re serving up a page-turner full of the things that make us smile.  Love is at the top of most people’s list, so we take a look at how the popular dating app Tinder aims to deliver this elusive feeling in the digital age. We follow up with an interview with Italian auto design house Pininfarina’ s CEO Paolo Pininfarina, and find out how Ferrari’s go-to design company plans to make its mark in the Middle East.   We step inside Villa Kali, a blissful, modern beach house in Northern Lebanon and meet interior designer Francis Sultana in his elegant London showroom, where he talks art, design and his passion for craftsmanship. To keep you up to date on the latest in fashion, we get acquainted withthe founders of London-based Duke & Dexter, who’ve turned a fledgling startup into a bold collection of men’s footwear that keeps showing up on the red carpet. It’s also time for our annual horological supplement, where we give you the scoop on one of our favorite things: the latest in watches. Finally, it’s off to a few of the happiest places on Earth- namely Bhutan and Indonesia, with a pit stop in Italy for Mille Miglia, where we were fortunate enough to get prime access to one of the automotive worlds’ most prestigious races.

Our April/May 2017 – Indispensable Issue – we shed the light on the things, people and ideas that appeal to us on so many planes we’re utterly hooked. We start off with a product literally no one can live without, the smartphone, and ask Google’s CEO just what he means when he says his company is thinking post-mobile. Then we meet the brothers behind The Kooples, whose collections feature staples for everyday cool before Michael Jeha, the Managing Director of Christie’s Middle East, tells us why art is integral part of a balanced society, which leads us to find our own inner-balance with an escape to the car-free, eco-friendly Vigilius Mountain Resort for a much-needed breath of fresh air. Once upon a time we began as a boutique publisher with a signature title – Bespoke.
