Media freedom is a primary requirement for democracy. If the media is threatened or intimidated, then democracy will be in jeopardy. When we shout about transforming to democracy, our words, deeds and acts must be in full compliance with what we are saying. In turn, to become a democratic government, and gain the people’s understanding, the government must not trick, pressure or use violence against the people.

Political parties, big and small, have launched their first-ever major campaign in 25 years, which would be running in cities throughout the months of September and October. There is no doubt the whole world would be watching the unfolding of this political transformation in Myanmar where 30 million eligible voters would be casting their votes in a general election scheduled for November 8.

Myanmar has been hit with two crises of late – one natural, the other manmade. Floods in July and August have left at least 100 people dead and 1 million acres of farmland damaged, and are certain to have a long-term impact on the livelihoods of farmers and those who rely on them.

Myanmar's retail market is moving forward fast in line with the changing consumer culture. Though the number is still low and the pace is slow, grand and comfortable modern super markets are emerging and enticing the populace.

There may be some excitements that the Yangon Stock Exchange (YSE) will be a treasure trove for local investors. There may also be expectation that a high market for active investment will appear in Myanmar's economic sector. But also with those expectations there appear to be much anxiety over the challenges concerning YSE.

Along with cultural changes that took place worldwide in the 21st century, the traditional role of women in Myanmar took a revolutionary turn. That is quite a significant change in a country with deep-rooted cultural traditions; nevertheless the prospect of this becoming a sweeping change remains dim.

Building Markets is an international NGO operating in Myanmar since November 2012. Since that time, an immensely large database has been compiled more than 1,000 face to face interview with locally owned businesses in Yangon.
