Keeping the Nation’s Lungs Healthy

For over four decades and counting, the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) is undoubtedly the leading authority on how to address the alarming rate of killer lung diseases in the country. Despite a relatively still inadequate number of specialists in their ranks, the PCCP is taking bigger steps to bridge the healthcare gaps, and maintain a high quality of pulmonary care at par with their international colleagues.

For over two decades, the Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity (PASOO) has served as an authority and major resource for scientific and lay information on overweight and obesity. The Enabler of Dreams

Former Senator and Senate President Edgardo Javier Angara has been one of our regular columnists for H&L even after he retired as a lawmaker. With the health sector being close to his heart, SEJA continued to share his giant visions for the whole country through his columns tackling heath, and social change and development.

The Caring ‘Heart’

Now on its 66th year, the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) has remained steadfast in its commitment of making every Juan and Pedro in the country have access to adequate care by a cardiovascular specialist. Its trained and certified members are now spread all over the country, dispensing an excellent quality of cardiovascular care. With its goal to make every Filipino knowledgeable on the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), it has gone all the way down to the grassroots level to train people who can cascade their knowledge on CPR to every barangay in the country.

Doctors Wage Battle against Cancer

The importance of cancer screening goes a long way when it comes to prevention, early detection, and treatment. Through people and support groups who dedicate their time advocating against the Big C, more and more people will be aware that early detection is key.

In this issue, University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society (UPMAS) doctors gather to advocate screening among Filipinos through in-depth stories of common cancers in the country.

Farewell to an Icon

H&L is dedicating this issue to Dr. Ramon F. Abarquez, Jr., who helped shape the practice of Cardiology in the country with his innovative ideas, His ‘Me-first’ and not “Me-too’ philosophy inspired hundreds, probably thousands, of medical trainees and Cardiology fellows he has painstakingly mentored to come up with bright research ideas that can help enhance clinical practice in the country. He was also one of the pioneering columnists of H&L, who provided the inspiration that kept this publication going despite numerous challenges.

So long for now, our beloved Dr. Abarquez, as you take your well deserved rest with our Lord.

Philippine Rheumatology Association

The Philippine Rheumatology Association (PRA) is leading the way to provide the general population with expert healthcare in managing arthritis and other rheumatologic conditions.

With only around 150 specialists for a population of more than a hundred million Filipinos, there is really a gargantuan mission for PRA members to adequately educate the public on the prevention and treatment of these conditions.

Even if it has been years since they received their diploma, the alumni of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) still uphold the values of professional excellence and sociocivic consciousness their Alma Mater had imbued in them.

On the occasion of the upcoming UP Medical Alumni Society Homecoming, the UPCM Class 1992—the Silver Jubilarians—has prepared a year-long grand celebration of various meaningful events, with the theme this year as Walang Katulad. This phrase refers to the uniqueness of each graduate as an individual, and also collectively as a ‘tribe’ with one set of aspirations and values, despite their diversity.

This year, the Gusi Peace Prize is celebrating 16 years of promoting peace and goodwill and upholding its ideals in an international scale. Its list of laureates is composed of renowned who’s who in their respective fields. It is a testament of the unwavering dedication and commitment of the Gusi couple—Ambassador Barry Gusi and Dr. Evelyn Tantamco-Gusi, who have nurtured this annual peace-promoting project since year 1. Dr. Gusi passed away this year leaving a true legacy of peace and goodwill for which she will always be remembered.
