With the turmoil and controversy in the world today creating divisions and hatred, is it time to examine our lives? Is it time to embark on a journey that will change who we are and how we see the world and people around us? All it takes are hearts that are willing to be changed.

Love is more than just the expression of adoration. Put simply, it is our most powerful emotion, that driving force that has given humankind the courage to create and to wonder, to be good and to do good. But love isn’t simple, is it? Considering the many facets of love, the search to find it can take a lifetime. Join us to discover how love has shaped many of the stories, people, and experiences found in this issue of ART+DESIGN.

There are many combinations of personal and environmental variables that show the symbiotic relationship between ourselves and our environment - the personality of one cannot take shape without the other. Our physical, social, and mental well-being effects not only ourselves but the world in which we live.  In this issue, ART+DESIGN takes you on an armchair adventure as we explore stories about people, places, and things making an impact.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, grit in the context of behavior is defined as “firmness of character; indomitable spirit.”  If courage is the ability to rise to the challenge, then will is the determination to see it to the end. What does it take to make it in a world that doesn’t always care about you? Obviously, stick-to-itiveness is a trait of overachievers, so, in order to improve upon our lives, should the rest us invest more energy toward heightening our own levels of grit? Successful people are celebrated, and it’s hard not to aspire to reach their ranks. Ask yourself, though, how do you define success? Your definition may differ greatly from the variety of success society uses to separate the winners from the losers and the gritty from the listless. In this issue of Art+Design join us as we explore stories that tell of spirited people determined to make their mark on and in this world we live in.

In this issue of ART+DESIGN, we focus on something near and dear to everyone’s heart: the subject of “self.” Does our current society’s fondness of advertising how good we look and feel, in order to get an ego boost, echo the Greek myth of the beautiful but vain Narcissus? Trends expanding over the past decade, like the pressures put upon us by social media to be a “Special Snowflake,” the steady growth of the plastic surgery market, and the surfacing of a psychological version of the Adonis Complex (fittingly named “Dorian Gray syndrome”) have prompted psychologists to declare a worldwide “Narcissism Epidemic.” But what self-respecting narcissist would be humble enough to admit they have a problem without a little help. So read along as we reflect on the reflection in the mirror that so fascinates all of us, through the lens of art, design and experience.

In this issue, we explore the theme of "Destination" or "Destiny": Destiny is commonly believed to possess an element of human control that fate does not. We may be helpless against the inevitable trajectory of our fates, but our destinies can be molded by the choices we make. Desired destinies will vary, but our ideas about what light awaits us at the end of the tunnel are often the same. A beaming ball of greatness is in all of our futures, and we have the control to reach the golden ring we rightly deserve.

In This issue of ART+DESIGN, the relationship between human and machine is our exploration. Whether it's Elizabeth King's 'Pupil", an articulated self-portrait in the form of half-sized sculpture, or the essay on the subject by Laurie Fisher- this issue provides some insight into our obsession for machines.
