In this issue, we chatted with Hawaii-based artist Gordon Uyehara, who is a magician at translating metal clay into a menagerie of marine creatures and scientific marvels.
We also delved into the portfolios and ideologies of a dozen metal clay luminaries, who discussed what was the initial allure of the medium, how their connection to it has transformed their work, and why it should be a household word. Metal clay is a fantastic
medium for all concerned: the artist, the shop or gallery owner, and the collector.  Metal clay is that conduit for the artists we’ve profiled. As Poland’s Anna Mazoń, our Face Time subject, shared with us, “I had so many ideas inside my brain—not being able
to make them real was like an itching inside my head. When I found out about metal clay, it was magical!” And, wouldn’t you know it? One of her most popular pieces of
jewelry is called “Once Upon a Time.”

In this issue, we take a look at how the presentation of a work has enormous weight on
how it is perceived. In Daniel Grant’s “The Rise and Fall of 5Pointz,” the battle between
a building owner and the “aerosol artists” who have been decorating the neglected real estate is chronicled. Does tagging a building, setting up a person as its curator, and then forming a nonprofit corporation elevate it to museum status? You be the judge.
We also celebrate the eye-catching ways that artists, curators, shop owners, and promoters
display the work that they have created or are entrusted to sell. In our Crafts Scene pictorial essay, we present a myriad of ways that heartfelt artwork has been exhibited
to touch collectors. Making art is a personal leap of faith; selling it is very often a
team effort. You have to strike the right chord with a potential retailer and/or interested
collector. Showcasing your finished work in its best possible light is the final step in
making your visions a desirable reality.

Rebecca Rose, our Profile in Success artist, told me how in the fourth grade, she
would transform pencils into kachina dolls and sell them to her classmates. She
confided that this early foray into creativity and commerce might have had a lot to do with her having the confidence to follow a career in the arts.
The artists in our Crafts Scene examination of 2014’s trends talk about what inspired
them to try their hands at brand-new challenges. For many, it was responding to the “happy accidents” that fell their way. They eagerly let go of the familiar and surrendered to that part of their nature that is fearless and bold and open to
tackling new possibilities. They allowed their hearts and their hands to embrace the unknown, the unexpected. In many ways, they approached their art with the wide
eyes and open minds that are often affiliated with the youngest among us. They allowed
themselves to be surprised.
As we head into the New Year, filled with hope and promises, let’s all make a resolution to mentor and shepherd along a new generation of craftspeople.

As you dive into this issue’s “Alphabet Soup - The top 26 reasons why 2013 is a year
to remember” (page 28), think about what changes you can start making that may potentially
land you as a must-cover headline at the end of 2014. If you find yourself lying
awake at 2 a.m. pondering the “what-ifs,” make a choice on what you can do tomorrow
that will lead you into a state of renewal in the next 12 months. This time next year, you
may well be living an entirely new level of professional success.

I was first exposed to Steampunk several years ago via the collectible doll industry,
which I am also involved in. There is something about it that’s enthralling and enamoring.
Elements of the style hearken back to the extravagance of the Victorian era,
combined with a sci-fi-oriented look at the future. The style seemed to light artists’
minds on fire, and it has since expanded its influence far beyond the realm of niche
markets. This issue’s Profile in Success takes a look at Sue Beatrice, who creates masterful
Steampunk sculptures that will blow your mind—seriously. Take a look on page 20.
This issue also features an inspiring holiday gift guide, a look at American Craft
Week, and the first article in a three-part series from Robert Kaindl’s own marketing
guru, Gina DeBlanco.

This issue of The Crafts Report we’ve dedicated to the beautiful creations of the 32
Facebook cover finalists who vied online for this issue’s cover. Bonnie Gibson took the prize, but as she said, “While I am thrilled to have won, I would have not been upset to have lost to the other 31 finalists. There were a lot of beautiful pieces, and we all were winners in my opinion.” And indeed they are. I encourage you to take a moment, or 30, and do what my lovely Athena has taught me: Admiring and soaking up beauty for beauty’s sake in and
of itself is worth the time. I hope you enjoy the breadth of talent and creativity our 32
crafts finalists represent.
