Discussing mental health among colleagues in professional settings is often considered taboo, despite its heightened prevalence. The theme of this issue focuses on bringing awareness to the importance of starting the conversation about mental health in the professional world and highlighting the many positive implications this line of conversation holds. Through creative works, innovative research, and thoughtful commentary, our authors explore the navigation of mental health in the professional world and assert their opinions on the theme.

This is the second of our journal publications since my appointment as JSNMA Editor-in-Chief, and I am truly humbled by this opportunity to once again feature the strong voices of SNMA's membership. From poems to research articles, the creativity and diligence of the authors and my team members have taken my vision for both issues to unexpected heights. Filling the Gaps with Socially Conscious Physicians is a collection of unique perspectives regarding the dire need to seal prominent gaps within medical education, patient care, and medical research. Whether promoting a hashtag to increase minority involvement in clinical trials or sharing socio-cultural challenges experienced with patients, I commend the authors for exuding SNMA's mission: (1) to support underrepresented minority medical and pre-medical students, (2) to address the needs of underserved communities, and (3) to increase the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians.

On behalf of the SNMA Publications Committee, it is our upmost pleasure to present to you the Fall 2017 JSNMA Issue: Addressing Racial Bias in Medicine. This is the first of our quarterly publications since my appointment as Editor-in-Chief, and I am truly humbled by this opportunity to feature the courageous voices of our SNMA members who undertook this controversial yet delicate topic. Their diligence and creativity, combined with that of my team, have taken my vision for this issue to unexpected heights. From opinion pieces to research articles, it provides powerful insights regarding the influence of racism throughout the many dimensions of medicine.

We are excited to present our Winter 2016-2017 issue of the JSNMA – Race & Medicine. We are all well aware of the disparities present in our current medical system, especially among minorities. Traditionally, medicine and medical education have largely focused on understanding disease processes and one’s ability to recognize the “zebras” of diagnoses however understanding the culture and values of our patients can play a significant role in health outcomes. Minorities are largely underrepresented among medical professionals. The AAMC numbers from 2015 stated that while African-Americans comprise 13% of the population they make up just 4% of U.S. physicians. Hispanics make up 14% of the U.S. population however only represent 6% of U.S. physicians. Efforts to diversify medical schools to improve these unsatisfactory numbers are underway. How do you think medical schools are faring? How can they improve further? We should remain proactive in encouraging academia to bring this issue to the forefront. Whether it is gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion it is important that the institution of medicine strives to represent the community it serves.

We are thrilled to present our Fall 2016-2017 issue of the JSNMA – Equity in Healthcare. According to World Health Organizations equity can be defined as “the absence of avoidable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically, or geographically.” The principles of health equity include insuring equal access, utilization and health outcomes for all populations seeking healthcare. It is important to have a global approach in solving these issues to create healthier communities. The theme of this issues focus on disparities faced by marginalized groups in the United States and abroad. Through creative works, innovative research, and thoughtful commentary, our authors explore challenges faced in achieving health equity and assert their opinions on the theme.

We are thrilled to present our Winter 2015-2016 issue of the JSNMA –Mental Health in the Media. Mental Health is often misrepresented and stereotyped by the media thus contributing to the unfortunate stigma of mental health in our society and abroad. The theme of this issue focuses on illuminating this reality and addressing how to combat its sometimes devastating effects. Through creative works, innovative research, and thoughtful commentary, our authors explore the mental health in the media and assert their opinions on the theme.

We are overjoyed to kick off the year by presenting this issue of the JSNMA – The Stigma of Mental Health. Mental Health is an area of healthcare that is in great need of increased attention through spreading awareness and improving access to quality care. The theme of this issue focuses on current views of mental health and how to combat the stigma associated with this vast field. Through creative works, innovative research, and thoughtful commentary, our authors explore the stigma of mental health and assert how to combat it. 

The theme of this issue hinges upon the intersection between media and medicine and asks whether this dynamic relationship poses as a friend or foe. In this issue, the authors comment on the theme while also demonstrating the theme at play through their pieces. Interspersed among media + medicine commentary we present creative works, innovative research, and new books to explore. 

As articulated by the CDC, “People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) are members of every community. They are diverse, come from all walks of life, and include people of all races and ethnicities, all ages, all socioeconomic statuses, and from all parts of the United States.” Nevertheless, there is a great need for culturally competent healthcare for the LGBT community specifically; for, as with other communities that remain victims to social inequalities, the LGBT community suffers from poorer health outcomes and health disparities unlike those faced by other social groups.

On October 4, 2014, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary Founding Day! SNMA was founded in 1964 largely due to the efforts of NMA member and past NMA President, W. Montague Cobb, MD. The two SNMA founding chapters were Meharry Medical College and Howard University College of Medicine. On October 4, 1971, SNMA officially became an independent organization giving life to “SNMA, Inc.” Over the years, SNMA has expanded to include over 150 SNMA and MAPS chapters at medical schools and undergraduate institutions across the US with greater than 6000 members. Today, SNMA is the largest and oldest student-run organization focused on the needs of medical students of color.

We are thrilled to present the Global Health Edition! In this issue, we feature the work of many of our talented pre-medical and medical SNMA student members. Our authors share current research endeavors as well as their experiences with practicing medicine abroad. 

It is with great pride that I welcome you to the 50th Anniversary JSNMA. This special edition highlights the incredible history of the Student National Medical
Association through contributions from current and past members. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the SNMA, it is a timely moment to recognize the important role the JSNMA has played in conveying the message of our organization over the years.

There is much to celebrate and reflect on for this season: being thankful, being generous, celebrating family traditions, and embracing the new year. This season is also an opportunity to reflect on what it means to have humanism in medicine. William Osler stated: “Let us know what kinds of people have a certain disease, instead of discovering what kind of disease a person has.” A good doctor-patient relationship is the foundation of good medical care and allows physicians to address the more nuanced, human, non-technical factors in patient care. Inherent in this relation-ship is empathy: the ability to see life through another’s perspective. Research suggests that empathy levels are high in the basic science years of training, and drops in the third year and again in residency, at two transition points when trainees gain increased exposure to patients. The stresses of limited time, high volume of patients, and limited control of one’s schedule may result in burnout, decreased empathy, and disillusionment with medicine. The great news is that empathy certainly can be taught, as it is necessary to build a strong therapeutic alliance.

This “Back to School” Edition is focused on reflections on our premedical and medical education. There is much discussion on healthcare education as we move from a traditional curriculum, driven by learning objectives and assessment to a curriculum that is the outcome that is driven by the needs of our health and health delivery systems. Submissions on the theme reflect unique experience taken to enhance one’s premedical or medical education, or include reflections on what can be done to enhance the educational value of the premedical and medical curriculum.

This issue features many aspects of healthcare and how it fits into military life, from how corpsman handle the day to day injuries of their troop in the field, to what happens when a soldier is seriously injured, to treating the extended psychological damage war causes (in the form of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder).
In addition to the health of soldiers, this issue discusses the hardships of those who deal with the military. Joanne Angeles discusses military family health, both the coverage military families receive from the government as well as the strain these families face worrying about their loved ones on tour. William G. Wood provides a personal look into how the military deals with soldiers who have family crises at home while they are on tour. Finally, Miriam Hanna discusses the unexpected emotional toll on physicians who treat the battle wounded and shell shocked.
