Australian Shepherd The Australian Shepherd, aka Californian Shepherd, Spanish Shepherd or New Mexican Shepherd, originated in the United States of America. The Aussie was refined on American soil from dogs brought there by the Basque shepherds who actually came from Spain, and followed the sheep farming industry to Australia, before immigrating to western USA.
