In the depths of the Democratic Republic of Congo lives the most recently discovered, and rarest, of the five great ape species. It's also the most diminutive, yet it's impact on historical assumptions about patriarchal dominance has been the greatest. I'm talking about Pan paniscus, the bonobo.
