Birdrooms: Making The Most Of What You've Got

It doesn’t matter whether you have a tiny birdroom located in your loft, or if you have plenty of space and a state-of-the-art brick-built affair, says DAVE BROWN; what’s key to our birds’ success is a clean set-up, good husbandry programme and plenty of TLC.

I AM lucky to have been invited to the homes and birdrooms of many fanciers. Just as there are many different breeders who each have their own characteristics and personalities, there are also a variety of birdrooms and set-ups to be seen.

Some are literally palatial. I was recently in conversation with Ali Boresli, a successful zebra finch breeder based in Kuwait. Ali was branching out into budgerigars and his new birdroom really is state of the art. There are cages of the highest specifications, a dishwasher, a fridge, specialist air purifiers and UV lights fitted to a mechanical rig programmed to move up and down in front of the cages during the day to ensure all of the birds receive equal exposure. All credit goes to fanciers who go to such levels to ensure their stock is given the best possible conditions in life. I’m sure if we had the funds, then we would all follow suit.
