The Land Rover, with its strange aluminium alloy panels, was meant to be a stop-gap for Rover. But the world fell in love with it, and it became an icon.
The first Land Rover was created by the Wilks brothers. Spencer Wilks (1891-1971) was the managing director and Maurice Wilks (1904-1963) the chief engineer of the Rover Motor Company, based in Solihull in England. They saved the company after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and were still in charge when the Second World War ended in 1945.
