Space the rows about 70cm apart. This can vary slightly to suit the variety, but standard settings are often more convenient.
Spacing in the row is not a crucial factor; you will obtain no difference in yield by spacing seed, say, 20cm apart as opposed to 4cm apart. Yield is determined, rather, by fertility and climate.
What counts is the number of pods per running metre of row rather than the number of plants over this distance. The key factor here is the sunlight captured by the leaves.
Extended spacing, however, can cause another problem. Because the number of pods is more or less constant per running metre, spacing the seeds further apart will result in more pods per plant. With this extra weight, the plants are more likely to topple over, especially as there is less support from plants alongside.
