The story of Lolly Smith and Tomorrowland
On 8 July 2015, HHCU Tomorrowland arrived at my home to start his training and new life as part of the Highveld Horse Care Unit’s Silver Lining Initiative. I couldn’t have been more excited to be part of this programme where it gives Thoroughbreds a second chance at life.
Early beginnings
When Tomorrowland first arrived, I looked at her and was a little confused, as she still looked like a foal. Tori, as I call her, was extremely friendly towards me and was very willing to let me show her love and affection. I gave her a week or two to settle in and then I started our training.
I was quite nervous at the start, but she gave me no hassles whatsoever. After I tacked her up for the first time she was very calm and easy. I took her to the arena and she was very happy to walk around and showed no fear being in a strange new place with a stranger on her back. The first month I only did flatwork and pole work with her and I was super surprised because she was so willing to do anything I asked of her. She was very clever and if she made a mistake she wouldn’t do it again; she was a fast learner.
