Low salaries and day rates are forcing grooms and working pupils to switch to more lucrative careers outside horses
GROOMS say they have been forced out of the industry due to “disgustingly low” pay. The issue of salaries was the focus of a recent discussion on social media surrounding pay rates for a day’s grooming at a horse trials.
Working pupils also reported unfair salaries that left them nothing to live on after their training had been taken into account and their livery fees paid.
One former groom, who wished to be anonymous, worked in the industry for nine years before switching to the NHS.
“I left because of the working conditions,” she told H&H. “People seem to think you do it for the love of it, but that mentality is wrong.”
