THE biggest shock in the run-up to these championships has been the lack of a British jumping team (see news p5), but on closer inspection there are some leading names missing from several nations’ squads. Such are the consequences of an ever-expanding five-star circuit and the inevitable “slump” year in the Olympic cycle. So expect the 2017 championships to bring some exciting new talent to the fore.
A total of 26 European nations look set to be represented in Gothenburg and, with Team GB’s defection, a total of 17 teams in action. The traditional powerhouse showjumping nations look set to dominate, with reigning Olympic champion, France; current European title-holder, the Netherlands; plus Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Ireland among the favourites for medals this time around.
