In the first instalment of his six-part series, artist HASHIM AKIB introduces the basics of working with the medium.
Acrylic is great for beginners because it is a forgiving medium. Layers – or paintings – can be painted over, but it will take a handful of works to acclimatize to its drying time. Light washes dry in minutes and thicker applications take up to an hour. When starting out, there’s no need to purchase anything more than a set of paints and a few brushes. I recommend flat-head brushes to create interesting marks. Accessories such as mediums or texture gels are unnecessary.
