Within old stone walls are hidden stories of great craftsmanship and ancient science balanced on indigenous engineering, and the mathematical genius of the number five and its many fascinating connections.
My passion for temple architecture and iconography began when I was a teenager and had visited the Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam (Tamil Nadu), which is the world’s largest living temple, and also the intricately carved temples in Belur and Halebid in Karnataka, which belong to the Hoysala Dynasty. I was blown away by the sheer magnificence created by the architects and sculptors of times gone by, skillfully cutting, chiselling and polishing stone, be it granite or soft stone. Having decided that this would be my career, I set about visiting and studying as many temples, ancient and medieval, as I could all over India, and especially in South India, The more I saw, the more I got drawn to this subject. The more I was drawn to it, the more I travelled. And so it goes on…
