Essence of Indian Spices

Indian spices and their use always leave the world mesmerized by the aroma of Indian food and the unique ‘Indian Masala Tea’. Freelance illustrator, Pavan Rajurkar tried to capture that Indianness and the everyday stories in his illustration for a product, named ‘Society Masala Tea’. He shares his step-by-step process of reaching the final artwork.

It usually starts with discussing colours, illustration style and elements with the clients. The idea is to have the client's objectives to meet the illustrator’s vision. This practice of involving the client in the visual process is important to understand the client’s demand and perspective. For this particular project, the brief was to capture the cacophony of India in a single visual with a unique style of illustration. Even when the client already had some direction for the output, the illustrator was given a free hand to explore the possibilities.

Step 1In the first sketch, incorporated all the elements based on the initial discussion. Started with a circular format until it is realised that the format is not feasible to adapt in other mediums. Since it was created using digital media which made it quite easy to change the sizes and composition of the elements, but the same does not apply to other mediums.
