The Great Escape
Identity|June 2019

Sometimes discovering great design hotels on your doorstep provides the same buzz as going away… Here’s where to stay and chill during the long, lazy summer holidays and what to expect.

The Great Escape

“This is the ideal hideaway for couples and families seeking a tranquil escape,” Axel Jarosch, General Manager, Jumeirah Al Wathba Desert Resort & Spa tells identity. “Embedded deep into the breath-taking backdrop of panoramic desert views, the Resort offers a welcoming and alluring experience, resulting in a relaxing and invigorating escape. It’s designed to draw people together yet provide the freedom to be lost.”

Situated in the historical district of Al Wathba, 40 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, and home to the annual Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, the hotel features authentic and traditional design, evoking the atmosphere of a traditional Bedouin village. Meandering courtyards, walkways, water features and pools inspired by the natural falaj (water channel for irrigation) add to the sense of calm. Space is emphasised by the secluded villas with private pools, a 1000-square metre pool and Arabian-style rooms. The Talise Spa further decompresses harried guests with its ‘rejuvenation journeys’. There are 13 treatment rooms and private terraces in addition to Turkish hammams, snow caves, hot and cold plunge pools, crystal salt and cryo-therapy rooms. Should you wish to continue with your asanas, there is also a dedicated yoga platform. As for cuisine, there’s plenty of choice, with six restaurants and bars drawing inspiration from Arabian flavours, Italy and the Mediterranean. Romantic poolside dining can be enjoyed at Panache or at the remote desert camp of Al Mabeet, inspired by Bedouin traditions and the legends of Arabia.

With romance and relaxation on the agenda, Jumeirah Al Wathba provides respite from the UAE’s ‘always-on’ culture and offers a chance to reconnect with Arabian history.

Best for: Design enthusiasts and night owls
