Functional art
I create handcrafted, artistic and esthetic glass and/or clay objects that are also practical and utilitarian. In other words, everyday objects that are creatively conceived and shaped and which bring beauty into our everyday lives. For me the vessel form is the epitome of beauty. It exists to hold or contain, both literally and metaphorically. It is all encompassing in its generosity – it receives, it holds, it gives. It is a vehicle to bring to expression my ideas and feelings as an artist.
Drawn to glass
As an undergraduate at NID, where I pursued a Diploma in Industrial Design (Ceramics), I got a very thorough grounding both in the overall design process as well as in the material and skills required for ceramics. This solid base has been an invaluable asset throughout my career - one from which I have been able to draw on time and again.
I first saw glass being blown as a child and the image had always stayed with me. I was always keen on making glass. With ‘glass and ceramics’ always being clubbed together, it seemed natural to move from one to the other. After completing my education at NID I went abroad in the hope that I could branch out into glass. The turning point was when I met Anthony Stern in London and he agreed for me to apprentice under him. After the first day at Anthony’s studio I was hooked to the medium. What I love most about it is the spontaneity and impulsiveness of the making process and I enjoy the feeling of immediacy it imparts.
