In the context of electrification and development activities, fuel cell vehicles represent an increasingly inter esting approach for various vehicle classes, especially for those with long ranges. AVL provides proof that a competitive fuel cell plug-in hybrid vehicle can be realised with existing components and minimal changes to the powertrain.
DRIVE DIVERSITY
The automotive industry has always been in flux, but at the moment it is experiencing one of the most fundamental changes in its history. More and more technologies are pushing onto the market – firstly, in order to reduce the emission and fuel consumption of vehicle fleets within the framework of legal requirements and, secondly, because customers want technological improvements and innovations. This diversity is already evident in the (now) classic hybrids and extends through plug-in hybrids, mild hybrids and even range extender applications – each in combination with diesel or gasoline engines.
At the same time, however, with pure battery-electric vehicles, more and more powertrain technologies are being pushed into the market, which is completely going away from conventional combustion engines. AVL is getting more and more involved with the development of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems for various vehicle applications – from passenger cars to all commercial vehicle classes.
MODULARITY OF PEM FUEL CELL SYSTEMS
In addition to the new challenges, in-vehicle integration of a fuel cell system [1], the modularity of the powertrain is one of the biggest challenges in development. As shown in 1, the performance classes currently in development for automotive fuel cell systems range between 30 kW for a passenger car and CV range extender application, to around 70 kW for a typical passenger car system with light hybridization, to about 120 kW to operate heavy-duty vehicles. In addition, several individual systems of the same size are typically used as modules for very powerful fuel cell systems with several hundreds of kilowatts.

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation.
