We’ll start with Claes Wärefors’ ‘Speedmetal’ (below); Claes has been a bike builder for three decades, but’s never created a long-fork chopper until now. His bikes’ve always been good though – we don’t know anybody else who’s won five different classes at the Norrtälje Custom Bike Show over the years (Custom, Classics, Classic Custom, AMD Jury’s Choice, and this year Harley Chopper).
Project Speedmetal started two and a half years ago, named after the metal music Claes loves. It’s also a great name for a chopper with a heavy emphasis on good handling – see, for example, how the frame has a little more ground clearance than other rigid frames? Scraping the asphalt while cornering was a big no-no from the start. Claes knows how to take a motorcycle apart and put it together again, but realises his limitations. With his last bike he had help from a metal-working genius named Kegny Karlsson at KDK Performance, and so asked him if he’d like to help out with a new chopper project. You guessed it – the answer was yes.
To some people, good handling would mean mid-controls, but Claes has a reason for wanting his feet forward. “If you ask me, riders with mid controls look a bit like they’re sitting on a toilet!” He explains that the bike’s ‘stance’ is super important to him – if it doesn’t have the proper lines to begin with, no details can camouflage the lack of the right stance. The length of the forks is one example of how meticulous he is; he originally ordered an 18-inch over from the guys at Tolle Engineering in Stockholm, but with the rolling chassis assembled, he realized he’d miscalculated and had the 18-inches replaced with a set of 19-inchers! “One inch may not sound like such a big difference, but when I have a certain look in mind, it has to be perfect...”
