Carb Diet!

Chancey’s RGV is coming together, but he’s removed carbs more times than a serial dieter...

Paul Chance
Carb Diet!

First, a recap! Back in the April issue I introduced myself and my RGV250M.

Yes, like many of you I succumbed to nostalgia and went the way of the two-stroke. I found this gem for £2700whichwasnotrunningwhenI came to buy it. A haggle and a plug clean saw her start third kick!

After that it was a case of cleaning, de-greasing, vapour-blasting, fitting new rings and pistons as well as some very lovely JL (Jim Lomas) exhaust pipes. So now what?

Well, now the engine was in one piece it was installed in the frame and all the powervalve cables were checked and lubed. The power valve mechanism was set up too. This involves the ‘grey wire’ test, where ignition is turned on and the grey wire under the seat is earthed and the servo moves to the mid position, it’s then the off position is switched and ignition switched off, the coinciding marks are lined up at the business end of the cables; maladjustment here can result in premature failure of those all-important powervalves!

Carbs were then treated to the recommended emulsion tubes and jets for the JL pipes. This was just a case of float bowls off and unscrewing and refitting. The jets are up from 270/280 to 280/290 but emulsion tubes are weaker as the overall effect is to weaken the mixture. You will now notice that the two cylinders run slightly different jetting due to it being a V-configuration and each cylinder having slightly different demands.
