“Salt Chipping”and Rustall to prepare that authentic rusty look!
Believe it or not we’re going to use rock salt to prep our body for paint, then we’ll apply our homemade decals and get them snugged down with Solvaset, and blend everything together with Rustall and paint.
With the tank and cab completed I decided I would try my hand at weathering. I’ve done a little weathering here and there, but never really went all out on trying to make it look right. So I jumped on the internet and looked up how to videos on the subject. General consensus is that rock salt is the way to go. Wet down your model, sprinkle on the rock salt, let it dry (so the water evaporates), and spray on primer, or rust. Sounds easy, but I had one problem. I couldn’t find the rock salt anymore! Not real popular in California. Back to the internet. Target over by work had some, problem solved.
To take our weathering even further I bought the RUSTALL weathering kit at my local hobby shop. Still learning how to use the kit, but for my first attempt it came out pretty good.
To help blend in the home made decals we used some of the gray we sprayed on the bottom of the tank, Tamiya’s “Rubber” (not as dark as flat black), and Tamiya’s flat brown. Rather then use a dry brush, I used cotton swabs and paper towels. Don’t be afraid to get some on the decals, it’ll help blend them. Next time we’ll start on the chassis and weather the cab.
