Honda’s CBR600 – the ‘everyman’ motorcycle – well, every ‘person’ too, as everyone from newbie riders, race champions, girls, shorties, lardies, skinnies and everyone in between has probably ridden one, raced on one or owned one.
It’s beyond the scope of this single page to go into full historical detail of theCBR600F, except to say that it was launched in 1987 in ‘Jellymould’ form (F-H) where it set a new yardstick in the class, through to the brilliant 1991 F-M, then ram-aired F-S of 1995 and then this model.
The 1999 F-X was pretty much a new sheet of paper design. Out went the old steel frame and in came an alloy beam-frame at last. The chassis itself followed Honda style and logic of the time, so the swingarm bolted to the back of the motor. Decent Nissin four-pots replaced the old brakes, in came a shorter wheelbase for quicker turning and we finally had a 180-section rear tyre, thanks to the wider rear rim. Best of all, weight was way down to 170 kilos (down by 16) while a new motor with a 4-2-1 exhaust finally made a full 110bhp.
