At present India is the largest milk producing and consuming country in the world with a compounded annual growth rate of 5%. The Government has been implementing the National Dairy Plan Phase I (201217). Its focus is on the development of the dairy industry for increasing its productivity, improving the village level milk procurement system and giving greater access to markets. However, it is also time for private sector players to provide extension services to farmers.
The normal milk production in India has turned into a socio-economic activity over the years. While this industry has both organised and unorganized sectors, the organised one is again divided into cooperative and private sectors. The Milk and Milk Products Order (MMPO) was passed in 1992 and the cooperative sector of the dairy industry was dereserved. After the passing of the MMPO, the private sector stepped into this sector for liquid milk and its products business. Earlier the private sector was into products like ice cream. Today, the Indian dairy industry is producing raw milk, pasteurised liquid milk, cream, butter, ghee, ice cream, cheese, curd, butter milk, flavoured milk, srikhand, dairy whitener, condensed milk, milk powder, spray baby foods and casein, lactose and whey powder with the last three products having nutritional and medicinal values being used in the pharma and food processing industries.
