Prabhakar sawant’s entrepreneurial ventures, Atreya engineering works and Mandovi Drydocks, have earned a respectable name in business circles.
Almost four long decades in the industry, Goan shipbuilding major Mandovi Drydocks has been seizing the opportunities in the sea. Despite the unpredictability of the global markets, the company has stood the test of time. The acclaimed brand has witnessed steady growth with clients all over the country from Kandla in Gujarat to Kolkata in West Bengal and event the Middle East.
Having begun a career at Chowgule Shipbuilding Division as an apprentice, after completing his engineering from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Prabhakar Sawant acquired enough experience to start his own firm. He started his business journey in 1981 with Atreya Engineering Works, a barge repair workshop based in Pilgao, Bicholim. His initial vision of the company was to provide quick repair service to the barge industry.
In a matter of nine years, after putting in lots of hardwork in his honest enterprise, an additional area was acquired and a new full-fledged multi-purpose shipyard, providing integrated ship building, repairs, and other allied services was started – giving birth to Mandovi Drydocks in 1990. The company has its facilities at Bicholim, North Goa on the banks of River Mandovi and at Rassaim, South Goa on the banks of River Zuari.
Mandovi Drydocks is an ISo 9001:2008 certified by Indian Register Quality Systems, accredited by RvA C071, a Dutch Accreditation Council and National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies. It adheres to the quality and high performance standards laid down by international classification societies such as the American Bureau Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, Bureau Veritas and Indian Register of Shipping. Mandovi Drydocks was awarded with the ‘Most Promising Upcoming Shipyard of Goa’ by the Goa Maritime Day Celebration Committee in 2007.
