Welcoming famed patrons, from royalty and celebrity to the creative and the notorious, Cafe Royal was the epicentre of fashionable London for over a century. Combining architectural heritage with contemporary design, the iconic landmark has reopened as a luxury hotel in the heart of West End, with elegant Mayfair to the west and creative Soho to the east
Previously the haunt of famed patrons, Cafe Royal has been an iconic landmark on London’s social scene for a century and a half. In its recent reincarnation as a luxury hotel, Cafe Royal remains an established favourite for locals, while also fast gaining a reputation with international travellers. Paying homage to the history of the building, grand historic areas have been sensitively restored, with a selection of restaurants, bars and event spaces reflecting and honouring the rich heritage of hospitality.
HISTORY
In 1863, a French wine merchant called Daniel Nicholas Thevenon and his wife Celestine arrived in England in a bid to escape the clutches of creditors in Paris. So began a story that grew out of bankruptcy and culminated in the creation of Cafe Royal, a London legend.
By the end of the 19th century Cafe Royal had already established an original reputation for excellent hospitality, dining and entertainment. French gourmet cuisine was introduced to the British capital for the first time and Cafe Royal quickly became known as possessing the greatest wine cellar in the world.
