The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) is the largest global trade organisation and has been active in South Africa since 2010, mainly through the well-known Fresh Connections: Southern Africa Conference & Expo. It aims to establish an inclusive, vibrant network in the region, unlocking the global and local value proposition.
The PMA represents companies throughout the entire fresh produce and floral value chain. The organisation helps members in the industry to connect, find new markets and access more business opportunities to increase sales and consumption of produce. It also shares new advances in science and technology.
In an economic climate of constantly changing dynamics, information on the current shifts pertaining to the local and international fresh produce markets is vital. Lindie Stroebel, PMA’s newly appointed general manager, and Krystle Dowling, from the PMA global research team, shed some light on these shifts.
A Population Explosion
According to PMA statistics, the estimated world population will exceed well over nine billion people in 2050. This means that there will be nine billion people in need of safe, nutritious food. Stroebel explains: “These people hail from all over the world and have different preferences, various levels of accessibility and a wide range of income levels. These factors define their dietary needs and determine the trade flow of agricultural and food products across the globe.”
She says that Euromonitor International, an independent provider of strategic market research, already reports massive increases in agricultural products traded internationally, especially over the past four decades. “It is estimated that international trade in produce will grow by at least 75% by 2026.”
Dowling provides the following list which outlines the constant movement of produce:
1. The European Union (EU) remains one of the largest fresh produce importers and exporters globally. However, according to The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the EU’s share in global fresh produce trade has consistently declined over the past 20 years.
