The animals are traditionally slaughtered at rural funeral ceremonies.
Mdukatshani, an NGO operational since 1975, assists communal farmers in improving their lives.
“Even during the height of COVID-19, rural grieving ceremonies continued as normal,” Mbata said, adding that goats were crucial during such ceremonies.
Mvezelwa Mchunu, a communal goat farmer from the Msinga/Weenen district in KwaZulu-Natal, said he sold a nine-month-old kid goat for R1 200, while a big castrated ram could easily fetch R3 500.
“Most companies [in the area] have shut down and there are no job opportunities. Goat farming provides a source of living.”
