An increase in the number of industries, substantial economic growth as well as a rise in the number of people living in urban areas has contributed to huge amounts of waste being generated – specifically food waste.
Food waste is not only considered a sustainability challenge with regards to food security but also has economic implications since it directly affects the productivity of the entire supply chain. Even though food or sustenance is the most basic necessity, in developing countries like India, the end consumer is one of the main contributors to food waste. The streets, public trash bins and landfills have enough proof to not have to look elsewhere.
Food wastage is a serious issue facing humanity and the planet. According to data, 21,000 people die of hunger or hunger related causes (UNICEF, 2011) and 1 out of 9 people go to bed hungry every night (FAO, 2008). Yet, ironically, a third of all the food produced is dumped into landfills. This is not just a humanitarian problem but also a serious environmental and economic challenge. Our planet has limited natural resources and based on the current state of affairs, pertinent eco-friendly and cost-effective solutions need to be developed to increase food production, help make the supply chain more efficient and improve distribution. A simple solution to address the increased demand for food production, is to significantly reduce food waste.
