Shows the path for a sustainable future through sustainable habitats...
Buildings are a crucial element in the Indian growth story, and are responsible for more than 40 per cent of energy use, 25-30 per cent of the waste generated and a substantial quantum of water use. The GRIHA Council, in conjunction with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), GoI, inaugurated the 8th GRIHA Summit with ‘Transforming Habitats’ as the theme.
Present at the occasion was Rajeev Kapoor, Secretary, MNRE, who launched the GRIHA rating for existing buildings. Giving his inaugural address, he said, “MNRE has been associated with GRIHA for over a decade and has supported this green movement. The distinctive aspect about GRIHA is that it is not only about the final product but also about the process of construction. There is a need to improve the entire ecosystem of urbanisation, as sustainable 50 per cent of India will be urban in the next 15-20 years. Herein, lies the challenge in urban governance and political and economic system.”
He also welcomed the new initiative of rating existing buildings, which will further spur the green movement and help gain momentum to achieve sustainable habitats.

Recommendations for Energy Storage in India
India’s energy sector has grown rapidly over the last year driven by policies, reforms and investments. Various policy initiatives such as introduction of UDAY, amendments in National Electricity Act, new solar RPO target for states, biofuel policy, small hydro policy, offshore wind policy and new hydrocarbon policy have all contributed to growth of the industry. However, there is still a long way to go with some persisting issues requiring attention and resolution at the earliest, making the upcoming budget crucial to the energy sector.
