The Taiwan-based $7.5 billion Cheng Shin Rubber Company Ltd, makers of internationally known Maxxis tyres, world’s ninth in global tire brands in 2015, will start producing twowheeler tyres first, and then for four wheelers and other vehicles, from its under construction plant in Sanand II Industrial Estate in Ahmedabad from next year. In a candid interview to Senior journalist, Jose Kalathil, at the company’s headquarters in Changhua, Leonard Liao, Vice President, Domestic Sales Groups, Maxxis, explains about his company, its achievements and his future plans. Disclosing his love for India, Leonard said he likes the well-known Bollywood star Aamir Khan.
Please tell us about your company?
The Cheng Shin Rubber Company was founded in 1967 in Yuanlin by a not so rich man, but a visionary, Luo Jye. As the company’s business grew, to spread its wings abroad, it created an international brand name, Maxxis, in the year 1992. In 2002, it established factories in the Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam and started selling to other countries. Maxxis tyres are now sold in 180 countries worldwide. INDIAN NR MARkET GETS A BREATHER
After the recent spell of poor prices mainly on account of growing imports and lower international prices, the Indian natural rubber market is witnessing a resurgence of late. The trend is attributed to the slump in production in the major NR producing countries like Thailand and Indonesia due to widespread fungal infection in rubber trees. Against this backdrop, indications are that domestic prices are all set to bounce.
HOW OLD IS TOO OLD?
Following the UK proposal for a ban on heavy duty tyres over 10 years of age and the possible extension of this to tyres used on taxis as well, most new tyre manufacturers are more cautious of setting an age limit on the use of their products than stressing the importance of regular checking and good maintenance.
